Setting Up Camp on Lake Coeur D’Alene

After months of social studies, chemistry and algebra, children and teenagers from around the country go on summer break and have an opportunity to pursue adventure and lifelong friendships at Camp Lutherhaven. Nestled on the banks of the pristine Lake Coeur D’Alene, Lutherhaven has provided outdoor education, leadership training and development for young adults for more than 70 years.

As one might expect, summertime is the busiest season for the camp as students from around the country converge on the Northwest to enjoy nature and countless fun activities during their time off from school. That said, Lutherhaven is active all year, hosting sessions and camps and welcoming organizations and groups that rent the stunning facilities for retreats and gatherings.

Founded by representatives from five Lutheran denominations across Washington and Idaho, Lutherhaven was envisioned as a summer retreat for servicemen and their families upon returning to the Northwest after serving in World War II. Today, it hosts thousands of children, teenagers, schools and faith-based groups. Since its dedication in 1946, the camp’s original 16 acres have grown tremendously. Lutherhaven now covers 60 acres of land, including space for swimming, hiking, sports, quiet reflection and bonding.

The Murdock Trust recently provided a grant to Camp Lutherhaven to update cabins and facilities, including living quarters designed for adults who visit as part of church and community group retreats. Our staff toured some of these renovated spaces during a recent visit to the Idaho area. From the meticulously groomed grounds to the gorgeous views of the lake, Lutherhaven truly represents a type of oasis from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

We are grateful to the staff at Camp Lutherhaven for their hospitality and for their commitment to providing local youth with a safe, positive environment to grow and develop during their breaks from the classroom.
